Ngorongoro Crater
Wonder of the world at 20 km wide largest calderas in the world. This majestic are, to call the crater simply one outstanding feature in the vast Ngorongoro Conservation area diminished its stature. But the fact remains that it is the only one attraction within this huge and diverse area that contains recently active Volcano's, Soaring mountains, Archaeological sites, Rolling plains, River, Forest, Lakes and Shifting sand clones.
Explanation for the name Ngorongoro are as diverse as the areas wirdlife, some say the word is taken from an especially valient group of Datoga Warriors who defeated the Maasai in a Pitch battle on the floor of the Crater 150 years ago. Others believe it to be the name of Maasai age set or the name of a Maasai cattle bell maker who lived in the Crater.
Activites and Special Interests
There are 25,000 larger animals within the crater itself, mostly Zebra and wildebeest. However, this is undoubtedly the best place to see black rhino in Tanzania as well as prides of lion that include the magnificent black-maned males. There are lots of colourful flamingoes and a variety of other water birds around the soda lake on the crater floor. More than a 100 species of bird not found in the Serengeti have been found in the crater. Other game: leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephants, warthog, impala, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and lots of other members of the antelope family and smaller mammals of sorts.
